Asbestos Garage & Shed Roof Removal in Kingston Upon Thames and Surrounding Areas

Here at Key Asbestos Services Ltd, we specialise in asbestos garage and shed roof removal across Kingston upon Thames and the surrounding areas.

Asbestos garage roof removal is one of our most common queries. As well as garage roofs, we often receive calls about entire garages and sheds made of asbestos cement.

The most common occurrence is corrugated asbestos garage roofs, which are to be found in their millions across the country. These were built between the 1930s and 1980s, with the vast majority containing asbestos. These are asbestos cement, a bonded material where the likelihood of fibre release is very low, assuming there is no damage.

We need to know whether the garage or outbuilding contains asbestos. If there is any doubt, we can carry out an inspection and sampling to confirm whether asbestos is present.

So, what happens if your roof does contain asbestos?  If there is little damage, no exposed fibres or cracking, then the risk of fibre release is low. If you are not planning any refurbishment or demolition projects in the foreseeable future, then you can usually leave the garage roof ‘in situ’.

Upon completion of the controlled dismantling of the roof structure, all asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are handled in strict accordance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011. The waste is encapsulated using a double layer of 1000-gauge polythene sheeting, sealed with reinforced adhesive tape to prevent fibre release during transit and then consigned to a licensed hazardous waste facility via a registered waste carrier, ensuring full compliance hazardous waste tracking protocols.

If you have decided to retain your roof, you will need to monitor its condition. This means looking out for signs of deterioration and ensuring the roof is not damaged or broken in the future.
Removing a damaged or aged asbestos roof is the safest option. If we remove your garage roof, our fully UKATA-trained operatives can carry this out and dispose of the waste at a licensed carrier site.

H2 Asbestos Shed Roof Disposal

After we have safely removed the asbestos shed roof, all asbestos materials are handled in line with the current UK regulations. Roofing sheets are carefully taken down whole to reduce the risk of releasing fibres and are then double-wrapped in heavy-duty polythene and sealed with strong tape. Once labelled, the waste is transported by a licensed carrier to an approved hazardous waste site, with full documentation to meet legal requirements.

We regularly carry out demolition and disposal of full garages, outbuildings, sheds and smaller commercial buildings. We often remove the asbestos cement roofing and cladding and remove the full structure down to slab level.

We can offer advice and guidance concerning whole asbestos structures and can put forward a cost for removal. It is likely to be necessary to have a look at the building in person or at least have photographs to go on with full asbestos cement garages or sheds.

Once we have carefully removed the roof, we can dispose of the asbestos waste

safely at a licensed waste carrier site. The asbestos sheets are double wrapped in a thick polythene sheeting and sealed with strong tape, ready for transportation.

Beware that garage ceilings can also be lined with asbestos Cement or with the more dangerous asbestos insulation board (AIB) or similar board products. Asbestos insulation board is a notifiable licensed material and is more likely to release asbestos fibres if disturbed than asbestos cement. There must be no raw edges with this material.

If the garage ceiling is suspected to contain asbestos, then it is important to have it checked to identify exactly what is there and what action is necessary. The treatment will vary according to factors such as the type of asbestos, condition and whether the asbestos is likely to be disturbed.
